Teen Therapy Curriculum

The core of the SageWalk individual and group therapy for teen boys and girls is the Integrated Therapeutic Curriculum. At SageWalk, we have developed a "cutting edge" set of courses designed to pace each student's progress through the program, while addressing prominent issues that impede normal adolescent development and emotional growth at school.

The Rites of Passage curriculum contains different stages or "passages" that make up our program. Each passage contains specific lessons that encompass academics, emotional growth at school or self discovery exercises, and wilderness skills. Through this teen therapy, each student must master each of the concepts before moving to the next passage.

The following themes are addressed in the Rites of Passage curriculum:

  • Student's Past History
  • Relationships
  • Values and Beliefs
  • Independence
  • Family Social Pressures

As students progress through each passage, their level of responsibility and self understanding increases. As each wilderness skill is mastered through this type of reverse group therapy for teen boys and girls, the students lessen their dependence on their gear and the group. The students complete the program properly prepared for the "next step" following SageWalk.

Intensity of Services

SageWalk operates on a 24-hours-a-day basis, seven days a week. The students participate in structured daily activities, as part of a group that includes a minimum of two trained Instructors at all times.
SageWalk's therapeutic program consists of a core team of licensed professional clinicians who are trained and experienced in the application of both conventional and experiential methods. All students participate in daily group counseling and goal-setting activities. Each student is assigned an individual therapist and will receive weekly individual therapy.

An Individual Achievement Plan is developed for students during the first week of their enrollment. Weekly contact is made with the family, educational consultant, or referral source, as requested. Each student and family is assigned a family therapist within the first two days of the student's program. The roles of the family therapist are to help the troubled teen and family work on issues and help facilitate the growth and success of the family, as a whole.

Academic Curriculum

Our ClassroomThe current academic component at SageWalk is integrated with the therapeutic curriculum of the program. We have developed a curriculum based on experiential learning and the five "Passage" workbooks. Our typical students' behavioral and emotional challenges have had a negative impact on their academic studies. Under the supervision of our educator, students are able to earn English/language arts credits. Sagewalk is accredited by the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools (NAAS). Being accredited by NAAS ensures that the credits a student earns are the result of a quality educational experience. Thus, Sagewalk must meet rigorous standards and is on a continuous cycle of improvement.

The credits earned are based on a pass/no pass system. Upon graduation, students will receive an educational summary indicating this and how many days they were enrolled in our program. Passing is determined by Oregon State Standard scoring guides used on daily assignments and during classes.
